[comp.lang.postscript] PostScript Previewer for VAX/VMS, DecWindows

belk@cernvax.cern.ch (andrew belk) (11/28/90)

Hi. Anyone know if a DecWindows PS previewer exists for Vax/VMS. I know there
is an Ultrix version, and there used to be a product called UTOX that did the
job, but apparently DEC had a licensing dispute with Adobe.

Any info appreciated. Mail preferred. thanks !

We have a machine that runs VMS DECwindows, and there is a program that comes
with standard VMS/DECwindows that allows you to preview PostScript files
(Actually we use the Ultrix version (dxpsview) all the time here.) Its file
specification is SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]DECW$PSVIEWER.EXE. If you run the default
DECwindows session manager, you should get it in the Applications menu (I
haven't used it for a while, so not so sure about this last statement.)
It is not PD though. Hope this helps.

From what I heard at DECUS last spring, that version of the PostScript
previewer wasn't supposed to be released, but made it out in one of the
VMS V5.1 versions by accident. It doesn't appear in any later releases.
VMS V5.4, however, introduces Display PostScript support in the VMS
DECwindows server. A PostScript previewer is bundled in the Compound
Document Architecture's VIEW utility. I've experimented with both the
previewer and Display PostScript programs with success (and glee!)
