[comp.lang.postscript] HELP!!! I'm missing a page from a BIG file

davidd@wolf.cs.washington.edu (David Doll) (01/02/91)

I spent more than half an hour printing a ~1.1Meg (200+ pages) postscript
file and at page 8, the paper jambed. I unstuck it (it was the last page)and
when I shut the lid, I heard the engine crank up - but there was no paper.
When I put in paper, it started at the next page: I'm missing page 8! Of
course this is under an important section like how to install...I looked at
the code and I'm kinda lost. Is there any way I can some how extract(?)
page 8 from the file and just print that out? I would REALLY appreciate any
help, I really don't want to reprint the whole thing. Thanks for your time
and help.

This all depends on the tools that you have on your system. If you have the
Adobe TranScript package, you can use the psrev program to extract the
particular page.

Your problem points out a general mistake in general. It appears that the
software that runs a laser printer dumps the page currently printing when
there is a jam. I thinks this SUCKS THE BIG ONE. Many a time I get a jam
in my printer and lose a page that I have to spend time getting to print
again.

Is there anyone in the know that knows why this STUPID idea was done in
these printers? Yes, I consider it stupid. I wish that the jammed page
would be printed again.

Yes I get very pissed when this happens. Just ask my kid :-(

I think it depends on when the jam occurs. If the paper jams BEFORE
Postscript and the printer can get the entire image on the page(be it
in fresh toner or ink or whatever), then the page can be printed again.
If it happens afterward, there is no way to reprint it because the page
is just not there. It would greatly decrease throughput if each page
must be kept in memory until the page hits the output bin, memory that
is needed to start a new page.
