It seems like requesting paths is a very, very common thing. Net.general gets about one request a day for a path to allegra!utopia or lord knows where. Chuq R. recommends that these requests be shuttled to net.misc or net.wanted, etc. Getting these requests off net.general is not unreasonable, but since the alternatives are so unspecific, I propose (gasp!) a new news group. Howsa about net.path? There certainly is enough traffic to warrant its creation, a couple of articles a week. Mason Woo brunix!mw Brown University

YES: the traffic exists, is isolated to a special class of question not suited to another group, and shows enough *lasting* interest to justify a group. The only possible difficulty is its effectiveness. How many people would *subscribe* to such a group? It wouldn't make interesting reading!!! Ideally, we should have not a newsgroup but a mail-based central path server. Lacking that, we can hope that enough people read net.all or feel altruistic to cause the net.path group to work. I suggest we create it and ask people to send mail to whoever creates it if they manage to find a path--that way we can see if it actually works, and get some feeling for how long it takes. Another point in its favor is the typical item would be extremely short--it would cost very little, in terms of transmission charges, for the number of messages carried. net.news.map should have the necessary info. -- Saumya Debray, SUNY at Stony Brook uucp: {floyd, cbosgd, ihnp4, mcvax, cmcl2}!philabs \ {amd70, akgua, decwrl, utzoo}!allegra > !sbcs!debray {teklabs, hp-pcd, metheus}!ogcvax / CSNet: debray@suny-sbcs@CSNet-Relay

Okay, I agree that net.news.map should be the place to put requests for paths. However, I didn't know about it, and I think a lot of people who send their requests to net.general don't know about it. The group gets very little use right now. Instead of destroying net.news.map, it should get a little more airplay and publicity as to its use. Mason Woo brunix!mw Brown University
