[comp.lang.postscript] How do you tell if colour is available

Can anybody tell me how you tell if colour is available on the printer
at print time?

I want to be able to produce a postscript file that uses colour (if
available) and various cross-hatchings if not. 

Note: doing    
                1 0 0 setrgbcolor currentrgbcolor
 
doesn't tell you anything. On my monochrome system that returns '1 0 0'.
