[comp.lang.postscript] Postscript Cartridges for the HP Laserjet IIP

The HP cartridge cannot be switched between PS and PCL modes without taking
out the cartridge (you described the PP cartridge on that point).

It really comes down to whether you want to pay for postscript or deal with
PhoenixPage language (a postscript clone), and how much you value switching
between PCL and PS modes (personally, I'd try and snag an older series II
and memory with the Adobe PS cartridge).

   From HP's PostScript cartridge user's guide 33439-90901
pg 2-11 CAUTION: Do not insert the PostScript cartridge while the printer is
                 turned on.
pg 2-18 CAUTION: Do not remove the PostScript cartridge while the printer is
                 turned on.
pg 3-1 ...Your printer therefore can have different operating mode:
          * PCL mode (without your PostScript cartridge installed).
          * PostScript mode (with your PostScript cartridge installed).

So MY question is, how do people switch between PCL & PostScript without
turning off the printer...

I think there is a confusion here due to differences between
the HP and Adobe cartridges versus the PacificPage cartridges.

Currently, you can't switch between PS and PCL through software
with the HP and Adobe cartridges; and it is recommended that
you turn off the printer before you remove or insert the cartridge.

On the PacificPage cartridges, it is possible to switch emulations
through software, ie. without manual intervention.
The escape sequence <esc>&l32259.1057J<eot> switches from PCL to PS,
while <esc>&l1057.32259J switches from PS to PCL.

I had planned to recommend the use of PacificPage's printer emulation
software switching on some networked printers. But the "soft reset"
is indeed a hard reset with the LaserJet going through the initialization
process everytime you switch printer emulations.

Perhaps the PacificPage cartridge I have is old (Version 3.12)
and there is newer firmware that switches printer emulations
in a more graceful and less time-consuming way.

This is true if you're talking about HP's postscript cartridge that works on
IIP/IID/III/IIID printers. The Adobe PS cartridge for the series II does
do switching between PS and PCL like the pacific page cartridge or through
a TSR called Printer Control Panel (PCPANEL for short) which can autodetect
PS or PCL jobs going through whatever port it's sensing.

Clarification: The Adobe PS cartridge and the HP PS cartridge do not compete
against each other. If you have a series II printer, its the Adobe cartridge,
if it's a newer printer, you have to use the HP cartridge (well, if you really
want true postscript in a cartridge :-).
