[comp.lang.postscript] Type 1 hints with rotated/skewed characters

While we're on the subject of Type 1 hints, there's something else
about them that has perplexed me. A number of the descriptions of
the hinting mechanisms in the Black and White Book talk in terms of
device pixels. How are we to think about these if the character
isn't aligned parallel to the coordinate axes? For example, how does
overshoot suppression work in this case? If the coordinate system is
scaled uniformly in X and Y, and device pixels are square, I can
imagine doing overshoot suppression perpendicular to the (rotated)
character baseline, but what if these conditions don't apply?
