[net.micro] MS-DOS

ugthomas@sunybcs.UUCP ( Timothy Thomas) (03/10/85)

I have a question about MS-DOS. It seems that in C I can call a dos
function via a bdos command. My problem is that it expects a number
for the dos command. How do I know what dos commands correspond with
which numbers.
Any replies would be most appreciated (via *mail* if possible).

Has anyone heard if Microsoft has plans to add multi-tasking to MS-DOS?

If by adding multitasking you mean hardcoded into say, DOS 3.x,
you can forget it. The rumor mill has it that MS-DOS 5.0 will be a
multitasking operating system, but will only act as such on an 80286 or
80386 machine, this being that those processors have a 'protected' mode
in which programs can be run independently of each other, a process also
known as 'virtual mode', a la IBM's VM operating system. However, there
are programs available now which will perform multitasking, although of
a limited variety, on an 8088-based machine. One such program is DoubleDOS,
by SoftLogic [I think]. I know this program is in widespread use, especially
by FIDO sysops who tend to want to use their machines for other purposes.
Microsoft also has released Windows, a graphically-oriented operating system
which will do limited multitasking. IBM's TopView was an attempt at the
same, but since Microsoft is THE powerhouse behind DOS, their product was
much more reliable and was better designed. Windows also lets you play with
mice, if that's your forte. [basically, it makes your PC think it's a
Macintosh-style machine]. Warning: Don't plan on doing any multitasking
on a 4.77MHz machine - it's just too slow. Plus, you need quite a bit
of disk storage for Windows - either a large ramdisk or preferably a
hard drive.

Disclaimer: I do not represent the above mentioned companies in
any way, other than occassionally yelling at them for improved products.
Sometimes they even listen!
