[comp.lang.postscript] Hard Disks on a LaserWriter IINTX -- How?

nrh@buzz.bellcore.com (Nat Howard) (02/23/91)

Hi,

I've got a scsi disk, I've got a terminator, I've got a scsi
cable, and I've got a LaserWriter IINTX, but I've got no action.
Here's the problem:

I attach this stuff together according to appendix A of my laserwriter
II manual.

I switch on the disk first, wait a while, and then switch on the
disk (which I've run connected to a MAC, so I know it and its cables work).

I use the chooser to choose the appropriate LaserWriter.
I run that "LaserWriter Font Utility" on the LaserWriter II Installation
Disk, and choose "Initialize Printer's Disk" from the File menu.

Unfortunately the "Initialize Disk" button is grayed out.
The "help" merely suggests turning on the disk first, which I do.

The manual says, a little vaguely:

You can add different sizes of hard disk to the SCSI chain,
but the LaserWriter IINTX must be able to tell what size a disk
is. This is possible with all Apple SCSI hard disks but not
with some other brands. These disks cannot be connected to the
	LaserWriter IINTX.

This had me going for a while, but our local SCSI expert tested it,
and the drive we're using responds correctly to "read capacity", and
even shows its size in the "mode sense" information.

I've now tried two different disks with this baby. This latest one had
the SCSI ID set to 1, if that helps.

I suppose I could buy an Apple Disk, but I'd really rather know what's
going wrong....

Thanks a lot for any help anyone can give me!

The usual reason people have problem hooking up disks to an NTX
printer is that the SCSI bus on that printer is a 50 pin connector,
NOT a 25 pin connector like it is on the Mac. The cable you need
is a 50 pin to 50 pin SCSI cable. If you were plugging into
the 25 pin connector on the NTX then you were hooking up the SCSI
disk to the serial input port on the printer.

If your disk is properly hooked up and the printer recognizes it then
the start page will have a little graphic which indicates that there
is a disk of some size, etc. If that isn't there then no utility is
going to recognize it via software.

Hope this helps,
