Hi group, I must apologize for a case of mistaken identity. I posted a comment about the US Robitcs modems. I incorrectly identified the modem I use on my BBS as USR. What I have is the Anchor Automation "Express". Not being completely out to lunch, I have used USR modems on other applications, and have not found them noticably worse than anything else. Note that it is the Anchor Automation modem that has a dialing directory and call progress monitoring, rather than the USR product. I apologize if any of you out there got gleeful ideas about ROM upgrades, or whatever. It does seem to me that I heard early reports of the firmware in the USR 1200 baud modems not handling (I'm not sure which) pin 6 or 20 correctly. That was supposed to have been corrected in later editions; we have not been effected by this problem. Aside from modem longevity and quality, the pbx phone system in the building where I work is a major source of anoyance. The system is bases on a Harris switch that uses a TDM multiplexed buss for call routing. As other calls begin and terminate, phase shifts are introduced that drive 1200 baud and 2400 baud modems without error correction crazy. Fortunately, our computer is endowed with a few FX lines that enter Ma Bell's netowrk directly. If this discussion goes any further, let's move to net.dcom. Thanks; sorry for the error Bill NEOUCOM Rootstown, OH 44272 wtm@neoucom (...!allegra!neoucom!wtm)
