[net.micro] How to get PD Z80 CPM for MSDOS

del@pilchuck.UUCP (Erik Lindberg) (08/05/86)

The response to my mini review on CPM emulation for MSDOS has been
overwhelming! My mailbox simply exploded with requests for this program,
so I am posting these suggestions on how to get it. I will also try to
respond to each individual personally, but that may take a couple of
days! So, here goes (this is in order of quickest to slowest):

1) Call my system to download it. It will take about 30 minutes at 1200
baud, so if you are very long distance, that may be expensive, but it
will be the quickest way. The number is (206) 488-7346, it is a western
Washington state number. Log on with first name "guest" and last name
"user", password is "usenet". Go to the file download menu and download
the file "Z80MU310.ARC", you will be prompted for a second password, enter
"usenet" again. (This is an RBBS-PC system, use "X" to toggle the verbose
menu on and off). The system is up 24 hours (unless it is down :-( If you
have trouble with this, call my voice line at (206) 820-2921.

2) Call every BBS in your area and look for Z80MU310.ARC. Make sure you get
"310" because version 3.10 is current and has all the features I described.

3) Send me a diskette with an addressed, postage paid mailer for the return
trip (or check to cover same). I will fill the diskette and send it on
it's merry way. If you forget to include the postage, the diskette
dead-ends in my stack of backups. Or just send me a check for $5 and I
will provide the disk, mailer and postage. Make checks payable to
   "Erik Lindberg" and send to:

                 Erik Lindberg
                 9805 NE 116th
                 Suite 7147
                 Kirkland, WA 98034

4) Write to the authors. I don't really recommend this, I don't think
they want to invest any time or effort into distribution of this
product. Here is an excerpt from the cover page for the manual:

"Placed in the public domain. No copyright notice. No legal mumbo jumbo.
No request for a financial contribution. No warrantee. Just a bunch of
 marvelous software magic.

COMPUTERWISE CONSULTING SERVICES, P.O. XXXX XXXX XXXX"

They wrote it to serve their own ends, and also say they won't fix
any "bugs" or add any features unless that *also* serves their own
ends. So, don't bother them unless none of the first three options
are viable for you. In fact, after thinking about it I deleted the
address above and left the rest of it as a tribute to this great
   outfit.

No, I will not post this to net.anything, and I will not uucp it. It
is 180k bytes in compressed ARC form, which means a hefty bill for the
net if I xmitted it, and lots of puking /usr/spool if I posted it.

I *will* however be glad to work out an arrangement with anybody that
doesn't feel the above options are viable, call me at (206) 820-2921.
When I buy the Z80 co-processor, I will also post a review of that board
(and the DOS interface to it).
