I would like to emulate the pattern feature of PostScript Level 2 in Level 1 compatible code. I need the ability to overlay several patterns without obscuring the preceding patterns. In the second edition of the PostScript Language Reference Manual, the authors hint that this can be done by defining the patterns as characters in a font, then showing the desired character repeatedly across the area to be filled. I'm looking for a fragment of PostScript code that implements this method. Any leads would be appreciated.
