Thanks to those poeple who responded confirming that I was doing the right thing with ehandler.ps. The problem is that when the printer runs out of memory there is not enough memory for it to print the error message. So I tried connecting a terminal to pins 2 and 7 of the LaserWriter Plus (I connected pin2 to the pin3 of the terminal) to snoop on the output that the printer is sending. This works well. It came back with the expected %%[ VMerror ... message, thus confirming that memory is the problem. We are short on memory because the Vax downloads some fonts to the LaserWriter. What can I send to the printer to tell it to clear its memory just before it works on my print job. Can I insert a few lines into my postscript file? The Vax checks before each job that the fonts are downloaded so there is no problem if I clear the memory because the fonts will be downloaded for the next job. I don't know a single word of Postscript. Connecting the LaserWriter directly to my Mac via Appletalk shows that there is 173356 bytes free. But when connected to the Vax there is only 97356 bytes free. Big difference. Thanks, Tony Cooper sramtrc@albert.dsir.govt.nz
