[alt.sources] Bible text wanted

erc@unisec.usi.com (Ed Carp) (12/07/88)

I am looking for the Bible in machine-readable form. I don't need the
database programs, just the source. I am writing my own driver for personal
research use, and need the text. This is not to be used for any commercial
venture.

Thanks in advance,

-Ed

Try dialing Russ n' Edies BBS (2400/8/1/N) at (216)726-2620. I seem
to remember seeing the Bible split across several huge files on that
system.

Contact Public Brand Software at 1-800-IBM-DISK. They charge about
$5/disk for shareware and public-domain software. There are several
disks that contain the bible. KV1.0-KV6.0 contain the King James
Old Testament and KV7.0-KV8.0 contain the New Testament (8 disks
in total). There is other stuff. Ask for a catalog.

I have no connection with PBS, except as a satisifed user.

If you have internet access, you can get them (the King James Version
translation of the Bible) by anonymously ftping to simtel20 and looking
in the pd1:<msdos.bible> subdirectory. The files you want to get are
DISKk{766,767,768,769,770,771,772}.ARC. You will need a unix version
of the ARC program to unarc the files. (Since each of these files contain
_another_ ARC file inside them, make sure that you do the first level
unwrapping WITHOUT doing newline translation.) Or, of course, you
could download them to a PC and the unarc them there....

If anyone has any problems with this, send me mail, and I'll be glad
to help. I've already pulled the sources from SIMTEL20, and am
working on some programs to browse through the Bible easily.....
