In a recent notice, Keith Peterson wrote about GEnie: [ Set your communication parameters to 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, 1200 or 300 baud, and full-duplex. Call 800-638-8369. When you get the CONNECT or ON-LINE message from your modem, type three H characters (must be upper case, no RETURN needed) to sync baud rates then wait until you see a 'U#=' from GEnie (User Number Equals?). Type the following: ^RVJM11999,GENIE<cr> where ^R is a control-R (which tells the local node to echo) and <cr> is a carriage return. You can omit the control-R if you prefer to do your own local echo (the node defaults to that). You will then be able to run a free demo, and sign up if you wish. ] I have an ad for GEnie in front of me and it says to set your modem to half duplex and at the U#= prompt, type XJM11943,GENIE<cr> I understand what is said about the ^R but why is the rest different? Also, if I do sign up, is there a place to type the ^R so that I can stay in full duplex instead of changing to half? Steven Dawson SJDMK@UNO.BITNET

1. I'm not sure why the user numbers in the AD and in the recent posting are different; try either and see if it works. 2. The Full/half Duplex selection works the same after you sign up: pre- cede your user number/password combination with ^R to put GENIE into full duplex mode. There is no way to switch modes once you are logged in, if you forget the ^R you can either turn local echo on or log off and log in again, this time with ^R. 3. The GENIE manual lists several different settings which supposedly work, to wit: 300 or 1200 Baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity FOR PCS; 300 or 1200 Baud, 7 data bits, 1 stop bit, even parity FOR TERMINALS. In my experience there is good reason for this distinction: If you set your parameters to 7 data bits, some XMODEM implementations will not work properly, even if they supposedly switch to 8 bits temporarily. XMODEM will run on PCs, not on TERMINALS, therefore the distinction. 4. Finally, GENIE has greatly improved in the four months that I have been using it, both in terms of speed and in terms of what is being offered. Definitely a better bargain than either Source or CS. ----------------------------------------------------- Wolf N. I see that genie has lots of pgms for cpm to down load now how about apple // stuff. What do they have for apple // users?

After seeing the postings about GEnie, I thought I'd give it a try. However, I can't seem to find out how to access it. Do they have local access numbers from major cities? Please respond by e-mail. -- Doug Scofea ...!cbosgd!doug Phone: (614)-860-2065
