i recommend the MetaWINDOW package from MetaGRAPHICS. they are at 4575 scotts valley drive PO box 66779 scotts valley, CA 95066 (408) 438-1550 they support a real lot of machines, graphics boards, and languages. the osftware is fast. many features such as bitblitting, multiple windows, virtual coordinates, etc, ar all supported, but it is very simple to use if you don't want to use these things. i spent the summer writing about 6000 lines of code which used this software heavily, and had no problems. bruce krulwich carnegie mellon (not affiliated with metagraphics or anything like that.)
