I've received several letters stating that non-blocking reads on PTY's do not appear to work correctly. Problems with XENIX pty drivers are known about, and I've been suggesting those users get the PTY driver which Chip Salzenberg posted some time ago. I've also been told that the ISC PTY driver is broken. I have since added code to "sm" which supports both blocking and non-blocking I/O. It has been tested on ISC 2.0.2 and found to work correctly when functioning in blocking I/O mode. The non-blocking code has been tested on several different O/S versions, including AIX, SCO XENIX, SunOS, AT&T System V, and found to work quite well. If you are having a problem with the last posted version of "sm" and would like a copy of the newest version, please send mail. I will send out a few copies to make certain the latest changes all work before sending the code off to comp.sources.unix. The code being sent to comp.sources.unix will include both a README file and a man page. Please DO NOT request a copy just to get the manpage as I want feedback on the bug fixes. -- John F.
