(Re: Prentiss Riddles' message to me about the merge) I am not in favour of the merge of net.records and net.music for the following reasons; 1) There is a distinct subset of discussions that should be in net.records which would include - record reviews, discussions of various recording technologies, basically all dealing with the lump of vinyl itself...and related.... 2) Similarly, there is also a subset of discussions that should be in net.music and not in net.records, including concert reviews, general discussions of bands. Articles about, say the 'best' albums of a group could be cross-listed, but in general, I would prefer the aforementioned divergence of topics. (Reality steps in:) Unfortunately, no-one else seems to hold this distinction, and I imagine that, for example, my recent posting on 'record cleaning techniques' would be routed to either net.music or net.audio...Perhaps net.audio would be more appropriate, but it seems that neither of the two groups are the correct destination - Consider; net.music is about MUSIC, not related topics like 'how the laser lights in Laserium work' or 'how to clean an album', and net.audio is, from my experience with the group (6 months of reading until I gave up reading 100s' of articles on whether having the turntable dust cover up or down leads to better fidelity....) more interested in the 'hardware' of audio than the methods of using/abusing it....besides, the coverage is a lot less if an article is submitted to net.audio than to net.records. Hmmm...perhaps we need a capability to create and destroy newsgroups at random...net.record.cleaning would be pretty appropriate....net.laser.lights too! (AUGH! Would that create a mess!) Seriously, though, I think that there should be some posted guide- lines about what type of article should be posted in what group...and then leave it up to the individual to decide which groups to read (as always). Meanwhile, I guess I shall post-no-bills to net.records. Oh well, I guess that change is a dynamic process....(gee) Dave Taylor
