This was a cause of confusion with a discussion of AI with my Aunt
a few years ago. I'm in Computer Science, and she is a nurse and
does veterinary work. After becoming confused, we discovered I was
talking about Artificial Intelligence, and she was talking about
Artificial Insemination...

Reminds me of a time, long ago, when I was having a conversation with a
schoolteacher friend about an assembly program she'd written. See, in
elementary schools they have assemblies, at which programs are
presented...

This is quite reminiscent of a library reference book called the Gale
Dictionary of Abbreviations (or something like that). Gale Research is
a company that creates publications by entering lists of things into a
database and then publishing various sortings as books.

Now the dictionary of abbreviations comes in two volumes. One is
like the list posted, listing in abbreviation order. The other
volume--and libraries really buy this--lists things by name and tells
you what the abbreviation is. Like you would look up International
Business Machines to find that its abbreviation is "IBM". Oh.

Does this really exist? Someone once told me that it was Abominable

A few years ago I designed a piece of hardware that I dubbed 'TINA', which
a fellow engineer claimed actually stood for 'This Is Not an Acronym' !!

Then of course there's 'TLA' - Three Letter Acronym...

A while ago I was in a team designing some networking software. A few
days into the design we had several modules with the usual, fairly, meaningful
three letter arconyms except for one module which was called TAL: The
Anonymous Lump. We kept meaning to change it since the design documentation
formed part of our deliverable but never quite got round to it.

It wasn't until we had actually implemented the software and we were just
tidying up the documentation that we actually did something about it: the
glossary said that TAL meant, Task Allocation Logic.

I always liked the self-referential (indefinitely recursive) acronyms:

EINE : Eine Is Not Emacs

and

ZWEI : Zwei Was Initially Eine

Along these lines, the gentleman who cites the example of TINA should perhaps
consider TINA Is Not an Acronym...

Should this all be in alt.sources.d??

I once was talking with a production engineer (circuit board
assembly). We discovered that the subject "AI on PCs" was a
reasonable, but ambiguous topic. To me it meant "artificial
intelligence on personsal computers." To him it meant "automatic
insertion on programmable controllers."
