#N:zinfandel:8900004:000:700 zinfandel!steve Mar 21 15:56:00 1984 I sure have to sift through the electronic equivalent of reams of net.jokes submissions to find a few real jokes. Much of the rest are humorous, but are not jokes. I know this has been brought up before, and I'm not sure what the consensus was, but how about a newsgroup called net.humor to which funny bumper stickers, license plates, op-codes, names, anecdotes, and so-forth can be sent, with real jokes sent to net.jokes? I can tell the difference, and I think that with a separation of the groups the average net subscriber could tell and appreciate the difference, too. Send any comments to net.news.group, the forum for such new group debates. decvax!sytek!zehntel!zinfandel!steve nelson

How do you define a joke? How is someone going to be able to tell the difference in posting? I do not think the separation is viable.

zinfadel!steve suggests that most of net.jokes (bumper stickers, road signs, oxymorons, etc.) be placed in net.humor leaving net.jokes only for "REAL" jokes. Zinfadel!steve further states that the distinction between where a submission should go is obvious. I see two possible results in the implementation of his suggestion: 1) Everyone will continue to submit to net.jokes thinking that their submission is a real joke. All the good jokes will of course end up in net.humor. 2) Everyone will not have a such a definite sense of distinction as steve, so everybody will post all submissions to both net.jokes and net.humor. Eventually mod.jokes will be created moderated by zinfadel!steve. end -) Actually net.humor in principle is a good idea, but I don't think it will be possible to move the majority of submissions to net.jokes into another group. There would be too much inertia to resist the change. (create net.jokes.jokes & net.jokes.humor ( -) ?)). -- David Whiteman sdcsvax!sdccs6!whiteman UCSD Medical School, La Jolla CA {insert boring .signature file here}

alice!alb is right: it will be next to impossible to determine what should go in net.humor and net.jokes. zinfadel!steve 's idea is good in theory, but not practical. Perhaps what is needed is to encourage joke tellers to be more accurate in their subject line, so readers can determine more easily which articles they want to read. -- David Whiteman sdcsvax!sdccs6!whiteman UCSD Medical School, La Jolla CA {insert boring .signature file here}
