[comp.std.misc] What is the FAX protocol like?

Can someone please email me some information about the form and format
of FAX document transmission protocols?
  How do they work?  Are they just modem transmissions?  What baud
rate?  What header info?  Any details or references for study would be
helpful.  Respond by email, and I'll be happy, happy, HAPPY!
