[comp.protocols.iso] X.409

dave@vdelta.UUCP (Dave Arnold) (02/02/88)

I am trying to gather an understanding of X.409 by reading the CCITT spec.
(Recommendation X.409, MESSAGE HANDLING SYSTEMS: PRESENTATION TRANSFER SYNTAX
AND NOTATION, Malaga-Torremolinos, 1984).

I am having difficulties trying to put this spec. into perspective as far as
an application program is concerned. For example, what would a application
program typically produce? The standard notation described in ANNEX B?
Could the program simply generate the standard resprestation described in
section 3?

Does there exist another document which would help explain this a little
better?

BTW, in a previous posting of mine, several people responded with the term
ASN.1

What is ASN.1 and how does it relate to X.409?

Thanks.
