[comp.protocols.iso] Workshop on ODA & Document Interchange

jr+@andrew.cmu.edu (Jonathan Rosenberg) (04/24/89)

The IBM Almaden Research Center, in conjunction with the National
Science Foundation's EXPRES project, is sponsoring a one and a
half day workshop entitled, "Compound Document Interchange Using
ODA." The purpose of this workshop is to explore the requirements
for the interchange of multi-media (compound) documents and to
discuss the use of ODA as an intermediate representation to
effect such interchange. A number of speakers representing
EXPRES activity and other ODA efforts will be participating. We
will limit attendance to approximately 60 people so that useful
group discussions can be held.

The workshop will be held on June 1-2, 1989 at the IBM Almaden
Research Center in San Jose, California. Although the details of
the agenda and speakers are not finished at this time, the
workshop will cover the following topics:

Thursday, June 1, 1989

     - Opening remarks & introduction: set the stage for the
workshop, summarizing the goals of the EXPRES project
and the importance of compound document interchange to
scientific communication. This will be followed by an
opportunity for a short introduction and description of
       interest by each participant.

     - Requirements for compound document interchange:
       presentations describing document interchange
       requirements from various perspectives, including
       electronic proposal submission, translation among
document system formats and electronic mail.

     - A short course in ODA: an overview on the ODA standard
designed to provide enough working knowledge of ODA to
understand its use as an intermediate representation
       for compound document interchange.

     - Experience with document interchange: presentations of
the current state of document interchange and
experience in the use of ODA, particularly what works
well and where further work is needed.

     - The CMU ODA Tool Kit: a brief presentation of the CMU
ODA Tool Kit, explaining its purpose, status and
       future.

     - Demonstrations: a demonstration of ODA translators and
systems (plans for demonstrations are tentative at this
       point).

After the final session, participants will proceed to a nearby
hotel for dinner and an evening speaker.

Friday, June 2, 1989

     - Practical applications of ODA: presentations of ongoing
or planned efforts involving the use of ODA.

     - The CMU ODA Consortium: a brief presentation of the
proposal for formation of the CMU ODA Consortium,
       followed by group discussion.

     - The future of ODA: a moderated discussion of the future
of ODA, especially for use in document format
       translation.

The formal agenda of the workshop will end by 11:00 AM on Friday
so that participants who desire will have time to take afternoon
flights back to the east coast from San Francisco International
Airport.

Accompanying this message is a form to be filled out if you wish
to attend this workshop. If you wish to make a presentation
during one (or more) of the sessions, please include a page
indicating the session(s) during which you wish to speak and an
abstract of your proposed presentation. Complete information on
the workshop -- including accomodations, directions and session
schedule -- will be mailed to participants. Because attendance
will be limited, I recommend that you complete the form as soon
as possible and mail it as indicated.

The General Chair for the workshop is Steven Zilles, of IBM
Almaden Research Center. The Program Chair is Jonathan
Rosenberg, of the Information Technology Center (ITC), Carnegie
Mellon University.
