NIST has been developing implementation specifications for goverment procurement. Regarding to protocols, I am hearing three names for it. Are they all the same? Or any differencies? From: sirosita@nttcom.ntt.jp (Teruji SHIROSHITA) Path: nttcom!sirosita (1) FIPS146 (2) GOSIP (3)Implementation agreements Further, any one tell me the functions(protocol name such as MHS,FTAM) of GOSIP Version 1 and Version 2. And when they are announced ? When procurements start based on them ? I am thanking advanced. NTT Teruji Shiroshita E-mail sirosita%nttcom.ntt.jp@relay.cs.net Tel +81 468 59 4675 Fax +81 468 58 8249

Implementation agreements are produced by members of organizations participating in the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Workshops for Implementors of OSI. "Stable" implementation agreements are considered final and advanced enough for use in product and test suite development. Before they are declared stable, they are published as working agreements, so that everyone who is interested can review them. GOSIP is the Government Open Systems Interconnection Profile. The U.S. GOSIP is prepared by the GOSIP Advanced Requirements Group. A new profile is expected to be published about every 16 months. FIPS PUB 146 is the first profile published and is referred to as version 1. A FIPS is a Federal Information Processing Standard published by NIST (formerly called NBS, National Bureau of Standards.) FIPS PUB 146 references the Stable Implementation Agreements, version 1, edition 1, December 1987. Beginning August 1990, federal government procurements must abide by the provisions of FIPS PUB 146 if applicable. Version 2 of GOSIP is expected to be published as a FIPS in the spring. The draft of version 2 references the Stable Implementation Agreements, version 2, edition 1, December 1988. The NIST Workshop in December recommended to NIST that the Stable Agreements, version 3, December 1989 be referenced in GOSIP version 2. Version 1 of GOSIP includes ACSE, FTAM, and MHS. Version 2 is expected to include these plus VT and ODA.
