There is indeed an async version of LAPB. It is called the Asynchronous
Framing Technique (AFT) and was originally proposed by Toby Nixon of
Hayes in Norcross, Atlanta.
To respond to an earlier question on the net: this protocol is not
as strange as it sounds. It really is a full LAPB, so Layer 2 is
unmodified, but you can veiw the physical layer as being changed.
The ptotocol will incur some processing overhead until appropriate
hardware is available. The CRC which is normally computed in hardware
for synchronous framing must be done in software for the async.
