I still have a basic problem with OSI Registration of organization names even after all of the responses to my original question. The problem is: Why Bother? which could be reworded as: Where's the Requirement? Everyone seems to feel: o registration has no legal status; o you can only register names you already have registered legally. Is OSI Registration of organization names not completely redundant or what? Seriously now, I see a legitimate requirement for buying values of type OBJECT IDENTIFIER, but I see no requirement whatsoever for reregistration of string names. The legal system already makes sure no two organizations can have the same name, and individual organizations can insure they don't use so many different names so as to confuse the world (organization names will change, ask Honeywell). Whose names are OSI service providers going to use? ANSI reregistered names with no legal status are no better than just getting the names from the organizations themselves, and it will ALWAYS BE CHEAPER to take the latter course! I guess if you have the heart of a bureaucrat than you can say: "Well, an organization name is not an *OSI Organization Name* unless it is *officially* registered by *OSI Bureaucrats*. Sorry for the sarcasm, but the whole thing just seems so, well, un-American. Joey
