A "heresy detected" light went on when I read the remark that perhaps bitmapped displays are not really necessary for a personal workstation. I have drawn quite the opposite conclusion from working in CMU's computer environment. We use Altos and Perqs for creation of drawings, schematics, and the like, and timesharing facilities for word processing. When creating a document, I find myself constantly running back and forth between the two systems, shipping "picture" files to the word processor for inclusion in the document. I would much rather have all of the facilities on the personal workstation, and I can't get that without a bitmapped display to do my drawings with.
