A few months ago, I sent out a request over fa.works for information and opinions on window management systems. Only recently have I had time to summarize the material in a form that does it justice. Thanks go to all the people who sent material in. The summary is in two parts: a bibliography and a compilation of "personal communications", contained in the next news item. Here's the bibliography: August 1981 issue of BYTE: articles on Smalltalk March or April (not sure which) 1982 BYTE: article on The Xerox Star Teitelman: Interlisp Programmer's Assistant, IEEE Computer, sometime in '81 Halbert: Programming by Example, Xerox Tech. Report/Stanford CS Dep't Report Myers: Displaying Data Structures, Xerox Tech. Report Latz & Rashid: paper in 7th Symp. on Operating System Principles (Dec 79) ???: "BRUWIN", in Proc. of the 8th SOSP (Dec 81) 1982 NCC Proceedings: article on the Star user interface (possibly that which appeared in BYTE this year) The papers by Halbert and Myers relate to the CEDAR Programming Environment developed at Xerox. The SOSP Proceedings are published as issues of Operating Systems Review, the ACM SIGOPS periodical.
