[comp.protocols.iso] use of connectionless transport for transfer of R/T data

cornutt@freedom.msfc.nasa.gov (David Cornutt) (11/21/90)

I'm looking at a possible application which involves using GOSIP-
specified protocols to transfer large quantities of real-time
data over a high-speed LAN, probably FDDI. The ideal way to do
this is to use a protocol stack with a connectionless-mode
transport, to complement 8473.  (It isn't just a matter of efficiency;
in this application, prompt delivery is more important than
completeness, and connection-oriented transports don't have the
right semantics.) My question: Does anyone have any experience
using the OSI-specified connectionless transport (8802?) for this
purpose? For that matter, has anyone used this at all? Is it
possible to set up a protocol stack such that the user can specify
multicast or broadcast routing (to destinations on the same LAN),
and have the stack map this to the LAN's multicast/broadcast
capabilities at the data link layer? Am I even making any sense?

Please mail to me if possible, and I'll summarize to the net.
