I posted a note to comp.protocols.iso.x400 in response to a question about X.500 I found there asking if there was enough interest to start a comp.protocols.iso.x500. Since there seems to be some interest in starting such a group, I thought I'd continue the discussion here so as not to burden the X.400 folks. Some people have replied directly to me. I think it might be better if those same people replied to this note so we can all see just how much interest there is, or if X.500 is better left to Mailing lists. I would also like to see the discussion open to as wide a group of people as possible. There was also a mention that the existing Mailing lists could be gatewayed to a notes group. I think this is a good idea. By having a group, people who are interested could participate without going to the trouble of subscribing to a mailing list. Many people have fleeting interest or some general questions easily answered by people who commonly read a group like this. This is a better way for people to get answers then to send a request to an entire mailing list. Furthermore, many in-depth discussions arise from simple questions and answers because the readership is large. I have seem many innocent notes spawn potent technical discussions which I think are very valuable. I, for one, would very much like to see any existing directory/X.500 mailing lists gatewayed to an X.500 notes/news group. I would vote yes for an X.500 newsgroup. Someone needs to bite the bullet and slog through the Usenet procedures (I just did it for comp.multimedia which should startup in the next week or so). I agree, BTW, that the netnews paradigm is better than a mailing list for this type of thing... -Ittai

Hello Brian (et al) -- Before we go much further, I suggest that we inventory the availalbe X.500 related mailing lists. There are several, but I do not feel that I know what they all are. It may be that they are all focused on subsets, and wowuld not sensibly be merged into some global newsgroup. At least, we must understand that the reverse flow would not make much sense (from a general X.500 newsgroup to the separate focused mailing lists). Best...\Stef

In article <5560078@hpindda.cup.hp.com>, atkins@hpindda.cup.hp.com (Brian
Atkins) asked for input on creation of a newsgroup devoted to X.500.
I'm definitely in favor of it. And I would also appreciate seeing a list
of current X.500 related mailing lists. [If you know of one and send me
mail I'll post a summary, unless someone posts a definitive list first.]
