[net.news.group] 3B* Newsgroup

 .

OK, now that Charlie Brown had the press conference yesterday
and officially announced the AT&T 3B* series of machines, how
about net.3b for discussion of these machines, since there are
already a fair number of 3B20s out there?

I don't want to set a precedent by creating net.3b with that name.
We already have too many misc. top level newsgroups. I propose
net.micro.3b. The 3B20 is certainly not a micro, but the 3B5
and 3B2 are.

I second (third?) the request for a net.micro.3b group. We have
two of the 3b2's coming in, and there are bound to be questions.

i suspect that in hindsight, net.bugs.3b would be the appropriate name.
(what kind of tense is that? present reference to future reference to
past reference ...)

For now, most users of the 3B are getting the in-house group. We'd have
to be careful about what we said, because we (or at leat I) don't know
exactly how much is "public" yet. The existence of the machines hasn't
been secret for quite some time now; the only difference is that non-ATT
folks can buy them. Until there are some out there, and outside users
have questions or comments, I don't see the point to a new group.

I also vote for the group.

All of us who work for private organizations with proprietary
information face the problem of what is and is not public. We
all have the responsibility to inform ourselves on this matter
and act accordingly. This seems to me a small price to pay for
all the benefits of the net and no reason to refrain from
legitimate uses of it.

I, for one, already have questions. For example, I have advised
certain clients to wait before committing to computer purchases
to see what ATT is offering. In the current announcements there
are almost no technical data. How much memory is in the 3B2
basic system? How much memory can be added? How many tty
channels? What mass memory, Any floating point hardware? When
can we order? What delivery?

Surely not all of these involve proprietary matters.
