I am trying to find information on some of the various ASN.1 encoding schemes being proposed as alternatives to the BER. I know that schemes have been proposed for higher performance encoding/decoding, for packed encoding/decoding, and for encrypted encoding/decoding. What I would like to know, is what stage these proposals are in (DP, DIS ...) and if I could somehow obtain early specifications? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Patrick Gainer (416) 448-4482 gainer@torolab5.vnet.ibm.com

There have been a couple of requests in this group about alternatives to BER, e.g. DER, and this reply might be of some relevance. There are indeed some proposals for alternative transfer encoding rules, and if I remebre correctly, they are approximately at the CD (Committee Draft=DP) stage. It may however be the wrong time to get the relevant documents, as the SC21 meeting in Arles, France in theese days include meetings in the working groups, and several aspects of ASN.1 will be discussed. It has been suggested that the ISO ASN.1 documents should be restructured. Furthermore it seems that the "new" things are not in a stable stage yet, being changed significantly at each meeting. I would suggest that you wait for the output documents from the meeting. I believe they should be ready some time after the summer holidays. The relevant group is JTC1 SC21 WG6, and I believe its secretariat is at ANSI. Klaus Hansen
