I'm a biologist working with an international biological data standards group and we are grappling with a geographical data standard that contains place names in many different alphabets. We are wondering whether we should mention any specific international coding scheme for alphabetic characters. I would be grateful for even short pointers to ISO's activities or contacts in this area. Are there stable standards for the binary representation/communication of foreign alphabets?
