Question: Who is responsible for the allocation of X.121 address name space; 1) In general ? 2) In the UK and France ? I am thinking in particular about public X.25 networks, and how they integrate with private networks. This must be a common problem for multi-national companies who have private X.25 networks in various countries and want to use an international service (e.g. Tymnet) to bridge them. Is this just a free-for-all situation ? or are the public network operators regulated ? I will summarise the answers and post to the group. bobw@gapos.bt.co.uk

Clearly, the CCITT is responsible for the allocation of the Data Country Code (DCC) and in some cases also the Data Network Identification Code (DNIC). The DCC is the first 3 digits of the 4-digit DNIC. Each contry's Administration ((i.e. voting CCITT member) is then responsible for the assignment of the last digit. In some cases a country has more than 10 data networks, so the Administration has to go to the CCITT for additional DCC. Some DNICs are allocated by the CCITT. They are for instance, the maritime packet networks (DNIC=1111 covers the Atlantic Ocean, 1112 the Pacific). Hope that helps. ....Erik.
