[sci.lang.japan] encoding schemes for japanese characters

dtomm@oracle.com (06/29/90)

The sony kana fonts in x windows have only
katakana, with encoding "JISX0201.1976", while the kanji font k14 has
everything, with encoding "JISX0208.1983", and the codes for katakana
are different. What is the difference between these two encodings?

More generally, could someone explain the various encoding schemes
used for Japanese characters? What is the difference in encoding
between a character set which has only katakana vs. one with all the
kanas and all the kanji? What is JIS v. shift-JIS? What else is
used?

References would be appriciated.
