One of our clients is writing a dissertation in East Asian Studies in which he will need to mix English and Japanese text. It's a historical dissertation, so it would be convenient (though not absolutely necessary) if he could use older and variant kanji. He will need to use Japanese for (1) short phrases, (2) quotations in the text, and (3) the bibliography. He will need to be able to print to PostScript printers (Apple LaserWriters without extra memory--downloading an entire kanji font may not be a practical option). He's interested in word processors (or WP add-ons, or system software) for the Mac or IBM PC. He's also got access to Unix systems, so a version of TeX might be a possibility too, but we probably don't have the resources to troubleshoot installation of a complicated package. My experience with Chinese system software for the Mac has been that it won't print to a US LaserWriter because the LaserWriter won't handle 16-bit characters (or something like that). I would presume that the same is true of KanjiTalk--that it expects a Japanese model LaserWriter. If anybody has information to the contrary (or knows how to get Chinese system software to print to a US LaserWriter), I'd be interested in hearing it.
