The Oxford English Dictionary is a cultural monument and one of the
great achievements of human scholarship.  The Project's goals are an
editing system and an electronic delivery system for the Dictionary.
This requires pioneering techniques in the areas of database
architecture and user interface.

Documentation and Testing Co-ordinator
------------- --- ------- ------------

Responsibilities are the production of user documentation and the
co-ordination of testing and quality assurance activities.  The goal is
to ensure that the system is useful and understandable.

Qualified candidates will possess a University degree in Computer
Science or some communications discipline.  Demonstrated expertise in
technical documentation, preferably with UNIX typesetting facilities, is
required.  Ability to interact with and support scholarly users of the
dictionary is essential.  Exposure to software testing would be an
asset.

Software Designer

Responsibilities are participation in the New OED Software research and
development, and provision of consulting to users of the system.

Qualified candidates should possess a graduate degree in Computer
Science or equivalent experience, and have participated in the design of
large software systems.  We require demonstrated expertise in at least
one of the following areas: database theory and implementation, advanced
text display technology, and formal languages and parsing.  Knowledge of
C programming in a UNIX environment is preferred.  Excellent verbal and
written communication skills are essential.

These positions are research funded and eligible for full University 
benefits.
