WANTED: 3rd and 4th year students eligible to receive NSERC Industrial Undergraduate Student Research Awards. THE OPPORTUNITY: We have several summer positions open which could be filled by undergraduate students with NSERC Industrial Undergraduate Student Research Awards. They all require considerable programming expertise. All positions are in Edmonton, Alberta. THE COMPANY: Myrias builds parallel processors with supercomputer performance. Making our system easy to use is of critical concern to us, but so is performance. We have a prototype system in our lab today, and it runs. It is not a small prototype. Indeed, its 512 processors and 256 Mbytes of memory make it the largest parallel processor in Canada. In the arena of medium grained parallel computers it is one of the largest systems in the world. We built the hardware, but we also built the software. Running on the prototype is state-of-the-art operating software. Software that makes parallel processing easily available to application programmers. Software that implements solutions, to what much of the world still thinks to be open research problems. We'll ship the results of one-half million lines of Myrias developed software with our first product. It is high quality software, and a high quality product. In the world of software developers there are 1's and there are 10's and lots in between - we hire the 10's. Do think you are up to the challenge? We've done the research, we've done most of the development. Now it is time to make sure that everything is production quality so that we can ship systems to customers. THE POSITIONS: 1) Operating Systems Group. Possible assignments: - help organize a performance measurement project - help establish procedures and programs for dealing with maintenance and control of system software - establish a literature index of papers and books on topics of interest to the group 2) Software Test Group. Possible assignments: - building test suite to verify operating system functions - writing or porting test suites for C and FORTRAN compilers - designing and implementing tests to verify various user/system interfaces - performance testing of various software components 3) Applications Group. Possible assignments: - understanding, parallelizing, porting and testing scientific libraries such as BLAS and LINPACK. 4) Technical Support. Possible assignments: - programming UNIX system administration utilities. - enhancing document preparation software. - developing end user database functions. THE CANDIDATES: Should be 3rd or 4th year Computing Science students with good scholastic records. Applicants from other disciplines will be considered if they can demonstrate significant computer and programming knowledge. Applicants must be eligible to receive the NSERC Research Award. Strong programming ability is essential. As you might expect we would prefer a strong operating systems background for work in the OS group, a strong compiler construction or OS background for work in the SW Test group and a strong numerical analysis background for the Applications group. THE APPLICATIONS: Consult your department about how to apply. They can supply you with NSERC forms (form 202) and information about the application procedure.
