LECTURER IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
IN THE SCHOOL OF COGNITIVE SCIENCES
UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX, BRIGHTON, ENGLAND
Applications are invited for the post of lecturer in Artificial
Intelligence in the new School of Cognitive Sciences from October 1988.
This is a new post, in accordance with the University's plan for growth
in the Sussex AI group, one of the largest AI groups in the UK. It
offers an undergraduate major in Computing and AI, a conversion MSc
course in Knowledge Based Systems, and research training for M.Phil and
D.Phil degrees. Research and teaching in AI are supported by a
substantial collection of Unix-based computers, including a VAX-750,
Orion1/05, a network of HP9000 workstations, a large and growing network
of Suns, and a Sequent Symmetry multiprocessor system.
Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in applied
Artificial Intelligence, though applicants from all areas of AI will be
considered.
Applied AI will be interpreted broadly, e.g. including all aspects of
work on expert systems, including knowledge acquisition, knowledge
representation, rule induction, planning, theorem proving, the
human-machine interface and user modelling, computer based teaching,
automatic program synthesis or verification, AI and software
engineering, AI and CAD, or tools for AI.
It is desirable, though not essential, for applicants to have
qualifications in computer science.
The successful applicant will be expected to play a full role in
teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to carry out
research.
Initial salary will be in the lower part of the Lecturer salary scale
(currently 9,260 to 14,500 pounds per annum, under review), plus
membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme or Federated
Superannuation System for Universities, as appropriate.
