This is a challenging opportunity for an experienced Lisp expert
who would like to work in a large and flourishing AI group in the
a UK university (one of the largest AI groups in Europe).
The Poplog development team is looking for an additional programmer to
work on the Common Lisp subset of Poplog. Poplog is a mixed language
development environment produced in the School of Cognitive and
Computing Sciences at Sussex University and marketed internationally by
SD-Scicon Plc (formerly called Systems Designers). Poplog includes
incremental compilers for Common Lisp, Pop-11, Prolog, Standard ML,
along with integrated screen editor, window manager, compiler-building
tools, masses of online documentation, libraries, OOP system etc. etc.
Several users have used the Poplog compiler tools to build portable
incremental compilers for new languages in Poplog.
Poplog (and any new language implemented in it) runs on a variety of
computers and operating systems. It is being ported to new machines. The
development team is located in the School of Cognitive and Computing
Sciences at Sussex University. Computing facilities include a VAX, and a
network of file-servers and workstations, including Sun2, Sun3, Sun4,
Sequent Symmetry, HP bobcats, Orion 1/05 (with clipper) and Masscomp.
The new programmer will work closely with the existing Poplog team.
Likely tasks include both improving speed of the Common Lisp sub-system
and adding higher level tools for software development and testing,
building AI systems, etc. Design, implementation and documentation
skills all essential.
The work is in a pleasant environment with opportunities to attend
research seminars, and interact with staff, students and researchers in
AI, computer science and related fields.

The salary is on the standard UK academic scale for research and
analogous staff, i.e. between 8650 and 15720 per annum, depending
on age, qualifications and experience.

preferably also experience implementing compilers.
