POSITION ANNOUNCEMTNT IN SCIENTIFIC VISUALIZATION RESEARCH

NASA - Ames Research Center
NAS Applied Research Office
Mountain View, California

The Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation (NAS) Systems Division at NASA Ames
Research Center has immediate openings for highly qualified persons to
participate in a research program in advanced visualization for support

The NAS organization at NASA Ames operates a state-of-the-art supercomputer
center, with a 4-processor Cray-2, an 8-processor Cray Y-MP, a nationwide
high-speed communications network, and numerous high-performance color
graphics workstations. The NAS advanced development laboratory for
visualization, programming environments, and advanced parallel computation
research includes several mini-supers (Alliant FX-8 and Convex C-1 computers),
a Connection Machine CM-2 with 32K processing nodes, a 100 MB/sec frame
buffer connection to the Cray-2, and numerous high performance graphics
supercomputing workstations (e. g., Silicon Graphics, Stellar, and Pixel
Machine). Ames is strategically located in Silicon Valley providing
immeasurable opportunities for interaction with the industrial and academic
communities.

The Applied Research Office of NAS is seeking additional personnel to
participate with NASA scientists in development of capabilities to
improve preparation, monitoring, display, and analysis of computational
fluid dynamics simulations and experiments. We are looking for candidates
with expertise and interest to conduct a program of applied research in any
of the following advanced visualization areas:

* Volumetric rendering methods and concepts
* Analytical and quantitative visualization research
* Novel 3D input/output environments and sound I/O
* Visualization software for parallel and distributed systems
* Integrated visualization environments for supercomputing.

Qualifications for these positions include the following:

* An advanced degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, or a
  related discipline.
* Research experience or course work in scientific visualization or 3D
  computer graphics.
* Familiarity with UNIX and programming experience in FORTRAN, C, and/or
  LISP.
* Ability to conduct publishable applied research in advanced visualization.
* Scholarly activities and/or publications in scientific visualization.
* Familiarity with computational physics and high performance
  workstations.

U.S. citizenship is not required, but candidates must be at least
permanent U. S. residents. Both civil service and contractor positions
are available.

Interested persons should send a comprehensive resume, names of three
references, a short statement of research interests, and copies of
publications to:
