[misc.jobs.offered] Research position in Amsterdam with Andy Tanenbaum

ast@cs.vu.nl (Andy Tanenbaum) (06/22/89)

I am looking for a researcher to join my distributed systems group
for a year. A typical candidate might be a "postdoc," i.e. someone who will
soon receive his or her Ph.D. in Computer Science, or it might be a professor
on sabbatical. In the past, the Dept. has had many visitors, in both
categories. To qualify for this position, you should have some research
experience in operating systems, distributed systems or languages, parallel
systems or languages, or some related area, and have some publications in
one (or more) of these areas. Systems people are strongly encouraged to apply.
Theorists need not bother: The European Common Market already has a
glut of butter, milk, wine, and theorems.

Our research centers around the Amoeba distributed operating system. For a
brief introduction, see the Dec. 1985 ACM Computing Surveys, and the past four
IEEE Distributed Computing Systems conferences for papers. I can provide an
up-to-date paper on Amoeba by email to anyone requesting it. The group
currently consists of about 10 people. Current research topics include:

  - Distributed operating system kernels
  - Distributed languages and applications
  - Simulating shared memory on disjoint-memory machines
  - Intelligent, rule-based, operating systems
  - Wide-area transparent operating systems

We are also building a prototype distributed system for OSF, in
cooperation with the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI).
We are also setting up a wide-area prototype of Amoeba among 4 institutes.

The candidate would be expected to teach one course on distributed systems,
and to help supervise some Master's theses in distributed systems. The rest
of the time would be available for research. Salary depends on age and
experience, and for non-Dutch citizens, is probably tax-free.

Interested candidates should send (by email) a resume containing:

  - Name:
  - Home and work addresses and phone numbers:
  - Age/Marital status/children:
  - B.S.: institution, date, major
  - M.S.: institution, date, major, thesis title, supervisor's name
  - Ph.D: institution, date, major, thesis title, supervisor's name
  - Computer systems/languages you know well:
  - Three professional references (name, phone #, email address):
  - Proposed starting date (not earlier than 1 Jan. 1990):
  - Current position, employer, and duties:
  - Previous work history:
  - Publication list:
  - A short summary of your current research:
  - A short summary of what you would like to work on here
(preferably related to something we are doing here):

Amsterdam is a pleasant place to live and work in. Everyone here speaks
fluent English. If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them.
Please reply within a week, if possible.
