dk@mips.com (Dan Koren - Database Engineering Manager) (06/11/91)
The Database Engineering Group at MIPS Computer Systems in Sunnyvale
is looking for experienced software engineers to participate in an
aggressive DBMS development program.
Depending on qualifications the work may involve one or more of the
following:
Porting of major DBMS products to the MIPS platform. Technical
assistance to ISV's porting DBMS products to the MIPS platform.
Performance analysis and tuning of major DBMS products running
on the MIPS platform.
Development of new O/S features to enhance DBMS performance and
functionality.
Engineering liaison between DBMS companies and MIPS' research and
development groups.
Consulting for strategically important accounts.
Participation in relevant standards committees.
These are high visibility positions making key contributions to the
company's business. They offer the opportunity to participate in the
development of the next generation of RISC database servers by working
closely with the elite of hardware and software developers at MIPS and
the DBMS companies.
The following requirements apply for these positions:
Familiarity with relational database theory; development experience
with at least one major relational DBMS product: Informix, Ingres,
Oracle, Sybase or Unify. Familiarity with the internals of current
or recent versions of these products is *absolutely* required.
Solid knowledge of either BSD or System V Unix internals with
significant experience writing kernel code such as system calls,
trap handlers, device drivers, memory management and file system
modifications.
Understanding of computer architecture and organization features
affecting DBMS performance - such as caches, virtual memory and
input/output subsystems.
Familiarity with networking and distributed computing in a Unix
environment - LAN's, TCP/IP, RPC and NFS.
Fluency in SQL, C, B/c/k-shells, make and RCS; familiarity with
at least one additional high level programming language and one
assembly language. Previous experience with MIPS based systems
and RISC/os desirable but not required.
Ability to work concurrently on several projects, independently
and with minimal supervision.
Strong communication and personal skills and a flair for the
complexities of dealing with outside organizations.
6+ years of professional experience in the computer or software
industry, with 4+ years of software product development in a Unix
environment; thorough understanding of software engineering methods
and practice with particular emphasis on product porting, performance
analysis and tuning.
MIPS Computers Systems was founded in 1984 by group of researchers
from Stanford University led by Prof. John Hennessey. MIPS is the
acknowledged technology leader in the development of high performance
RISC architecture and RISC based computer systems. Our architecture
and products have been adopted by some of the most prestigious names
in the computer industry: Bull, CDC, Compaq, DEC, Microsoft, Nixdorf,
Pyramid, SCO, Silicon Graphics, Siemens, Sony, Tandem, and many others.
MIPS has an excellent engineering environment which combines the best
of the Silicon Valley and East Coast engineering cultures.
If you are interested in one of the above positions and the opportunity
to work for a pace setting industry leader please e-mail or fax us your
resume. Plain ASCII and e-mail are strongly preferred. No phone calls.
Principals only please.
MIPS Computer Systems is an equal opportunity employer m/f/h/v.
