<I begin to like this bug - results in cute one-liners. please don't kill it> several times in the past, I've seen messages to new groups with a name just one letter different from an existing group. the latest example, which floated just by me, is "net.periph". As "net.periphs" already exists, I begin to wonder. Are there news-versions out there, which will create a new group automatically under some/all conditions? I can't belief that the authors of the articles in question created new groups, it has happened too often already for that.

Yes, there are versions that will automatically create a typo newsgroup. Any version of B news prior to 2.7 (I think) will. A news would too, although it was intended to be run with a complete list of valid groups in the NGFILE, and as long as this list was up to date, there was no typo problem.

net.periph is indeed a bad group.

<> Similarly, we have net.unix-wizards and net.unix.wizards - we've only had three articles in the latter. cbosgd \ qusavx mcvax / \ / decvax ukc!root44!west44!gurr / \ vax135 hou3b Dave Gurr, Westfield College, Univ. of London, England.
