would anyone that has written at least a few nontrivial interactive graphics programs in both X and NeWS care to comment? i realize it's a lot easier to just post articles that say "i haven't tried <whatever> but i'm sure if i did i wouldn't like it and besides although i haven't looked at a single line of code i know the implementation is very machine dependent or at least utterly bogus." still the believability of such testimonials is somewhat questionable. Parturiunt montes, nascetur ridiculus mus!

I've been using NeWS for about 3 or 4 months now (version 1.0) and I'm extremely impressed with it. The only previous window system I've worked with (other than just playing around) is the Mac window stuff. I definitely would take NeWS over the Mac toolbox any day. Some of my co-workers have used MS windows and X-windows. They also prefer NeWS. The NeWS extensions to postscript are pretty seamless and do not strike you as being "warts". As far as portability goes, I've taken a cursory look at the NeWS server code and it looks like ALOT of effort went into making NeWS portable. NeWS looks like it was designed to be portable from day one. I don't know too much about X11 but if it's anything like the X10 code, NeWS wins hands down portability-wise.
