[comp.windows.misc] Beta Sites Wanted

eberard@ajpo.sei.cmu.edu (Edward Berard) (06/28/88)

EVB Software Engineering, Inc. (EVB) is looking for beta test sites
for its Ada MacHost(tm) product. Beta versions of the product will be
available in mid-August, and EVB hopes to have qualified a number of
test sites by that time.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Ada MacHost is not an application, but rather it is a capability. It
allows it users (software engineers) to create Ada applications on a
host computer (e.g., a DEC VAX), and to interact with an Apple
Macintosh. Using Ada MacHost, software engineers can create
applications in which processing can be distributed between the
Macintosh and the host computer. Examples of applications which can be
created with Ada MacHost include terminal emulators, file servers,
software engineering environments, data entry systems, and software
engineering tools.

Ada Machost resembles the X Windows System in that it has both a
library which resides on the host computer, and a server which resides
on the Macintosh.(However, Ada MacHost is not based on the X Windows
System.) The host-resident library appears to the user as a collection
of highly object-oriented Ada package specifications. Each package
corresponds to a Macintosh object (e.g., a text window, a radio
button, a menu bar, and rectangle). The server is a piece of binary
software which runs on the Macintosh, and interacts with the host
computer through the library. The server runs on Mac Pluses, SEs, and
IIs. Knowledge of the Macintosh Toolbox is not required.

A single, host-resident Ada application can simultaneously interact
with multiple Macintoshes. In addition, Ada MacHost directly supports
Ada's tasking capabilities, allowing, for example, several tasks in a
single application to simultaneously control multiple windows on a
single Macintosh desktop.

REQUIREMENTS FOR QUALIFICATION AS AN Ada MacHost BETA TEST SITE

Applicants should have a recent version of DEC's Ada compiler running
under VMS, and at least two Macintoshes (Plus, SE, or II). Further,
beta sites must commit to providing EVB with feedback on the product.
EVB is looking for a wide variety of test sites, e.g., universities,
government, and commercial organizations. Foreign inquiries are also
welcome.
