From: Keith Pyle <pyle@UTEXAS-11> My research group is conducting a clinical data collection and analysis project for the National Institutes of Health. We have been using the UTexas Cyber system and the System 2000 data base management system but for several reasons must move to an off-campus system. We would like to buy a system with 250K - 1M of main memory, 15 - 20M of hard disk storage (expandable to 30 - 40M), and the ability to handle 2 - 4 users. We deal with relatively large amounts of data, so the system should be relatively fast. We will be limited to spending about $30,000 (exclusive of terminals, printer, etc.). My question: Where does a reasonably competent user-type with minimal knowledge of current hardware begin when faced with this sort of problem? I'm justifiably cautious of sales people and their claims (the recent review on WORKS of the Corvus Concept backs this up). I have talked with some of the UT Computation Center staff with some results but would like comments from a larger group. If anyone has experience with a system(s) that might fit our needs, I would appreciate your comments. W. Keith Pyle Director CAPD Data Coordinating Center -------
