I have had little success so far getting MGR going. Since our news feed seems to have been a little spotty the last few weeks, perhaps these questions have been answered and I missed it: 1. Has anybody else had the problems described below? Were you able to get it going? (If your answer is "just run set_colormap", then either you had a different problem or I am too dense, since I have tried that.) 2. How can I get a copy of the diffs to make this run on a SysV machine? (I saw this mentioned in comp.windows.misc, but have been unable to track them down.) If you can help on either of these, please respond by email. If you would like to know what I find out, mention that and I'll keep you in mind. One bug is serious, as > it prevents MGR from running at all on release 4.0 suns (it has a 1 line > fix though). > > -Stephen A Uhler (sau@bellcore.com) Even though I have applied these patches, I haven't been able to get MGR up completely on my SUN3 running SunOS 4.0. I'm hoping you've seen these symptoms before and there is an easy way to fix it. I have tried making the "color" version and the "prod" version. Both failed to come up, but differently: color: Got the opening copyright screen (very attractive!), but whenever I open a window, it hangs. Actually, the first window I open flashes on the screen and then disappears completely. After that, each window comes up on the screen as expected, but I never get anything to happen (no shell prompt, no echoed CRs, nothing). "ps" shows defunct processes, leading me to believe that the shell is dying for some reason (I've tried both sh and ksh). If I run it with a mgrc file, all the windows open up, but they just stare at me with nothing going on in them. I can mouse back and forth, etc, with no trouble. Just can't *do* anything. prod: Fails with "can't find screen", even though I have done the MAKEDEV for bwtwo0 (this is on a color SUN3). I have attached part of the output from debugging with everything turned on. The stuff at the end keeps repeating until I violated the filesize ulimit. Any clues? (Like, are other people having this problem?) BTW, I did set MGR setUid root. Anything else need that just to get basic windows cooking? My ptys are root 666 on both sides. ================================================================ Debug level: [*ABCDEFMNPSUbcdefilmnopsuwxy] *** got: font 1 sail6x8r.fnt ^M got font sail6x8r.fnt (1)^M *** got: font 2 gal7x11r.fnt ^M got font gal7x11r.fnt (2)^M *** got: font 3 ser7x12r.fnt ^M got font ser7x12r.fnt (3)^M *** got: font 4 cour7x12b.fnt ^M got font cour7x12b.fnt (4)^M *** got: font 5 cour7x14r.fnt ^M got font cour7x14r.fnt (5)^M *** got: font 6 ser8x16r.fnt ^M got font ser8x16r.fnt (6)^M *** got: font 7 ser9x18r.fnt ^M got font ser9x18r.fnt (7)^M *** got: font 8 cour9x16b.fnt ^M got font cour9x16b.fnt (8)^M *** got: font 9 cmr9x16r.fnt ^M got font cmr9x16r.fnt (9)^M *** got: font 10 cmr10x16b.fnt ^M got font cmr10x16b.fnt (10)^M *** got: font 11 gal12x20r.fnt ^M got font gal12x20r.fnt (11)^M *** got: font 12 cmr14x25r.fnt ^M got font cmr14x25r.fnt (12)^M *** got: font 13 cmr15x25r.fnt ^M got font cmr15x25r.fnt (13)^M *** got: font 14 shadow38x40b.fnt ^M got font shadow38x40b.fnt (14)^M *** got: font 15 dot1x1r.fnt ^M got font dot1x1r.fnt (15)^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M do button 4 (button state id 0) do button 0 (button state id 4) starting: (171,94) 776 x 668^M EXECING: /bin/sh EXEC done, slave side open^M Can't find font -1, using default^M starting window: (171,94) 776 x 668 font (8,16)^M min size: 46 x 22^M adjusted to: (171,94) 776 x 668^M /dev/ttyp6: event 11 (OFF) MAIN^M do button 0 (button state id 0) select: mask=0x19 poll=0x0 0x19 got^M 0x18^M Looking for dead windows^M /dev/ttyp6-0 DIED^M /dev/ttyp6: Select boo-boo fd(4) code -1^M /dev/ttyp6: I/O error Destroying /dev/ttyp6-0^M /dev/ttyp6: destroy main ^M waiting for ... 1507^M Unlinking /dev/ttyp6 ALL Zapping clip list^M Active: NONE-0^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M select: mask=0x9 poll=0x0 0x9 got^M 0x8^M do button 4 (button state id 0) do button 0 (button state id 4) starting: (190,181) 630 x 692^M EXECING: /bin/sh EXEC done, slave side open^M Can't find font -1, using default^M starting window: (190,181) 630 x 692 font (8,16)^M min size: 46 x 22^M adjusted to: (190,181) 630 x 692^M do button 0 (button state id 0) select: mask=0x19 poll=0x0 0x19 got^M 0x18^M /dev/ttyp6: Select boo-boo fd(4) code -1^M /dev/ttyp6: I/O error select: mask=0x19 poll=0x0 0x19 got^M 0x10^M /dev/ttyp6: Select boo-boo fd(4) code -1^M /dev/ttyp6: I/O error select: mask=0x19 poll=0x0 0x19 got^M 0x10^M /dev/ttyp6: Select boo-boo fd(4) code -1^M /dev/ttyp6: I/O error select: mask=0x19 poll=0x0 0x19 got^M 0x10^M /dev/ttyp6: Select boo-boo fd(4) code -1^M /dev/ttyp6: I/O error select: mask=0x19 poll=0x0 0x19 got^M 0x10^M [repeat till doomsday ....] -- -- Bill Carpenter att!ho5cad!wjc or attmail!bill
