The following is a summary of responses to my request for info about Vermont Views (by Creative Software): ******************************************************************** cs.utexas.edu (Jim Apple) Subject: Vermont Views We run it on SUN 3's SUN O/S 3.5, and have > 40,000 lines of code which use views. along with the window stuff the libary has alot of other functions, strings, list manager, memory manager etc .. We started with windows for C and windows for Data, which were the early version of views. So we have a couple of years experience with Creative software, overall they have been a great company to work with, very responsive and a great support group. Thier manuals are som eof the best I've ever seen. View's is 10000% better than Windows for C and Data so don't let bad reports about those products affect your feelings toward views. ... buy the source. I really like it. I have been able to get it to do everything I can think of. The one recommendation I would make is to get the source. It is not that much more money, and it makes somethings MUCH easier. The bottom line is that I would recommend it for DOS. I have never even seen it run under UNIX. ****************************************************************************** From: harvard!cs.utexas.edu!uunet.UU.NET!watmath!zaphod!bobd (Bob Dalgleish) Subject: Re: Vermont Views - need information about It also runs on MS/DOS and VMS computers. An earlier incarnation of our development group used their Windows for C package. The leader of that group left the company to develop a similar product (noncompeting), and decided to implement his system with Vermont Views. The first system was Xenix, and the second was SunOS V?. When interviewing him about the product and the company, he told me that he felt that the support was quite good, and proved it by selecting the company again when he had a chance. > Does the company have a good reputation? With us, yes. > Are there any similar or better products? These days, lots. The question you must answer (as we are currently doing) is: What do I want to accomplish? portability? how many platforms, consistent user interface, interoperability, etc. ***************************************************************************** Thanks to all who responded, Michael Lee uunet!cs.utexas.edu!necssd!necbsd!mlee 214-518-4608
