[comp.windows.misc] xterm emulators

tuv@pmafire.UUCP (Mark Tovey) (08/21/90)

I need help desperately! We have a Microdata computer running
PICK (don't ask me what it is, I never heard of before coming here).
There is a serial link between that computer and our HP system that
should allow us to access the Microdata from a terminal connected to
the HP.
The problem is that the Microdata computer does not use standard
VT type curser control commands to move the curser around on the
screen. Because of this, any screens sent to a terminal connected to
the HP system end up hashed. What I need is an emulator that will
translate the Microdata escape sequences to standard VT escape
sequences.
Since we have X running on the HP system, we felt the easiest way
to build such a creature would be to add an emulator feature to xterm.
After examining xterm, I found that it is already designed to be an
emulator of various terminals and that apparently I should be able to
add a look up table of some sort and a startup option to access it.
The terminals connected to the Microdata are Adds View Point
terminals. By any chance is there already an emulator available to do
this? If not, where can I get information on building an emulator?
Please be gentle. This is my first time with X. I know very
little about it other than it looks like it could be fun.

                                   Thanks in advance,
                                   Mark Tovey
