[comp.windows.misc] Automagically Receiving OpenWindows 2.0

jipping@cs.hope.edu (Mike Jipping) (08/31/90)

A while ago I posted a reply to a Bob Sutterfield query. He wondered
that since owners of OpenWindows 1.0 automagically received updates to
1.0.1, would they also receive an OpenWindows 2.0 upgrade for free?

I answered a definite NO!

Since then, my Sun technical representative corrected me and said YES --
such updates are automatic...and free! So I called our Customer Support
Representative and she said NO -- the policy has changed. So I called
the West Coast Tape Distribution Center and got two NOs -- the policy has
changed and you must buy the new version.

Suffice it to say Sun is confused on this. Has anyone actually received
an automatic upgrade?

Just CYAing...

We received an OW 2.0 distribution last Thursday. I think it was an
automatic upgrade because I didn't do anything active to prompt it,
and I didn't sign anything extra to cause it to be paid for. (The
arrival of the new docucrate was the occasion for my appropriation of
another bookshelf, this one dedicated solely to Sun paper. It brings
back memories of the wall I had covered with orange DEC binders, a few
years back.)

Mike Jipping raised the question "since owners of OpenWindows 1.0
automagically received updates to 1.0.1, would they also receive
an OpenWindows 2.0 upgrade for free?" Here is the definitive answer
to that question:

All owners of OpenWindows 1.0 or OpenWindows 1.0.1 who actually
*purchased* either version of OpenWindows will be upgraded to
OpenWindows Version 2.

So, an owner who purchased Openwindows 1.0, and was upgraded
"automagically" to OpenWindows 1.0.1, will be upgraded to
OpenWindows V2.

And any owner who purchased OpenWindows 1.0.1 will be upgraded
to OpenWindows V2.

The same process has been used for this "automagic" upgrade as
was used for the upgrade from OpenWindows 1.0 to OpenWindows 1.0.1.
Shipment of the many thousands of upgrades began on July 25, and
will be completed by mid September.

I hope this ends all confusion about Sun's policy on upgrading
customers to OpenWindows Version 2.

Yep -- it's sitting right here next to me on my desk about 3 inches
under Motif 1.1 that i'm trying to port to the Sparc ... when I get
around to it, and can find the disk space, i'll check it out. For now,
though, i've got XView2 in my source tree, but i'd like to check out
the server that Sun sez is so fast ...
